Stonehenge

Posted by at 6:00 PM Read our previous post
Stonehenge's certainly one of the UK's most important tourist destinations and attractions about 900,000 visitors every year
It is an enigmatic prehistoric monument located on a chalky plain north of the modern day city of Salisbury,
England and It was started 5,000 years ago and modified by ancient Britons over a period of 1,000 years.

Its purpose continues to be a mystery.
It is situated almost 3.2 km west of Amesbury.
It is believed that Stonehenge was built as a sacred monument used for meetings and religious purposes.
The key stones are aligned with major major solar and lunar events including Solstices and Equinoxes.

The building of Stonehenge started about 5,000 years ago with the creation of an earthwork enclosure. The presence of
post holes suggests that either bluestones or upright timber posts were propped up on the site.
Different scholars have different thought about the Stonehenge. Some say that the stones initially were to erect;
it was only after 2400 BC that they changed positions. Others say that the blue stones could have been the ones that
 were erected.

The site of Stonehenge is also another addition to the UNESCO and a part of the World heritage Sites since 1986.
It is also protected by the scheduled Ancient monument. The Stonehenge is a pride of the national trust of the country.
