Find Free Images for Blogs or Sites (Sources)

Posted by at 5:38 PM Read our previous post
Adding visual interest in the form of images is a widely-used method for attracting
readers to blog articles.

The quick and easy way to find free images you have permission to use is by searching for
public domain images or those under the Creative Commons license. Here are free
sources I recommend.

 Flickr’s Creative Commons Search

This social image-sharing site has gained a reputation for harboring high-quality free
photos. Search through the Creative Commons section or use the advanced search feature to
specify a search within the Creative Commons-licensed content, plus you can identify
whether you’re looking for content that can be edited or used commercially.

MorgueFile

MorgueFile has a large selection of free photos that you can use on your blog. Typically,
you'll need to ask for permission and link back from your blog post to the source.

Google Creative Commons Image Search

Of course, if there’s a searching need, Google has a tool for it. Within their existing
image search, Google added a usage rights parameter to their advanced image search. Here,
you can specify whether the image should carry a license that allows reuse, commercial
use, and/or modification.

Picapp

Picapp offers bloggers free access to and use of high-resolution images from Corbis, Getty
Images, Jupiter Images and more. Simply search the database, copy the provided code and
paste it into your blog post HTML editor, and publish your post. The image you selected
appears in your post. The catch is that gadget strip appears with the image. When a person
clicks on the gadget strip, they're taken to another web page where related images and ads
appear. You should take a look at the site's terms and conditions before you use Picapp
images. Image owners receive a royalty each time the image is used by a blogger and viewed
by visitors.

Wikimedia Commons

Wikimedia Commons is a gigantic repository of free images, sound and other multimedia files.
Public domain images are not copyrighted, and copyright law does not restrict their use in
any way. Wikimedia Commons images include public domain images and an huge collection of Creative Commons-licensed copyrighted work.

Fotopedia

This is a photo encyclopedia designed for photographers all over the world to promote their
content. At this point, it gives access to 700,000+ images which approach a wide variety
of themes.

OpenPhoto

OpenPhoto is a high-quality photo sharing platform created in 1998. Contributors offer
their images for free under terms of Creative Commons licensing and usage conditions vary
from image to image.
